O estudo analisa, na perspectiva da teoria da avaliatividade, especificamente no subsistema de engajamento (MARTIN, 2000; WHITE, 2004 [2002]; MARTIN e WHITE, 2005), como estudantes de graduação em Letras apresentam vozes teóricas em Trabalhos de Conclusão de Curso (TCC), revelando preferência por expansão dialógica do tipo ponderação (probabilidade) e atribuição (reconhecimento). Resultados evidenciam pequena responsabilidade da voz autoral.

Based on the Appraisal System, more specifically on the Engagement subsystem (MARTIN, 2000; WHITE, 2002/2004; MARTIN and WHITE, 2005), this study analyzes the way undergraduate students of Letras present theoretical voices in their B.A. final works, showing preference for dialogic expansion - entertainment (probability) and attribution (acknowledgement). Results evidence a low degree of responsibility of the authorial voice.

Este artigo tem como objetivo investigar como os elementos linguísticos de avaliatividade constroem os personagens (gays) no romance The Picture of Dorian Gray e em sua tradução e adaptações para o português brasileiro. A base da análise localiza-se na voz narrativa, presente nos processos verbais projetantes e no conteúdo da mensagem que constitui tanto o ponto de vista narrativo quanto os diálogos dos personagens. Para a realização desse objetivo, adotamos o modelo de avaliatividade de Martin e White (2005), empregado para revelar os recursos linguísticos que expressam atitude para com os eventos e as pessoas, com maior ou menor intensidade ou gradação, e com formas diferentes de comprometimento ou engajamento. O programa computacional WordSmith Tools, especificamente o utilitário Aligner, foi usado para selecionar e organizar alguns excertos da obra original em comparação com os mesmos excertos da tradução e das adaptações. As análises indicaram que o narrador foi o responsável por oferecer a maioria das descrições avaliativas de feminilidade, indicando a importância do ponto de vista narrativo para a construção de significados do enredo e para o estabelecimento de ideologias. A discussão também mostrou que várias diferenças de escolhas linguísticas de avaliação na tradução e nas adaptações, quando comparadas ao original, revelam que os dados encontram-se nos limites da criação textual ou reescrita, e não nos limites da correspondência estrita.

This paper aims to investigate how the linguistic elements of appraisal construe the evaluative representations of (gay) literary characters in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and in its Brazilian translation and adaptations. The centrality of the investigation is the narrator's voice, imprinted in the projecting verbal processes and the content of the message that constitute either the narrative point of view or the dialogues performed by the characters. To pursue this objective, we have adopted Martin's and White's (2005) appraisal model, employed to uncover linguistic resources that express attitudes towards events and people, with more or less intensity or graduation, and with different forms of commitment or engagement. The software program WordSmith Tools, more specifically the Aligner utility, served as the basis for selecting and organizing some extracts of the original novel comparatively with the same extracts of the translation and adaptations. The analyses have indicated that the narrator offered the vast majority of evaluative descriptions of femininity, which points to the importance of narrative point of view for the construing of the plot and for the establishment of ideological standpoints. The discussion has also shown several differences of evaluative linguistic choices in the translation and adaptations when compared to the original, demonstrating that the corpora do not fall within the boundaries of a strict linguistic correspondence, but rather within the limits of text recreation or rewriting.

Investigar o uso de processos verbais em determinados discursos tem sido o objetivo do Projeto SAL (Systemics Across Languages). Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar o emprego de cinco verbos que se fazem presentes no discurso jornalístico em língua portuguesa: dizer, afirmar, informar, pedir e anunciar. Empregados em orações verbais, especialmente naquelas em que há o depoimento de fontes externas, esses verbos exercem a função de introduzir o discurso de outrem, como uma forma de conferir autoridade ao dizer do jornalista. A análise está centrada em três aspectos: o tipo de dizente, o modo das orações e a organização da mensagem. Através do uso da ferramenta computacional Word Smith Tools (SCOTT, 2008), os dados foram quantificados a partir de um conjunto de 656 notícias coletadas da Folha de São Paulo e da BBC de Londres no ano de 2009. Os resultados apontam para a existência de três padrões principais utilizados pelos jornalistas ao empregar os cinco verbos analisados. Outras particularidades são: a) dizentes que representam principalmente fontes oficiais, realizados por nomes, pronomes ou grupos nominais em que o modificador indica o cargo ocupado; b) predomínio do modo indicativo e do tempo pretérito perfeito, especialmente na terceira pessoa do singular; c) equilíbrio entre citação e projeção, aquela geralmente antecipada ao processo verbal.

The main aim of the SAL (Systemics Across Languages) Project is to Investigate the use of verbal processes in some different types of discourse. This paper analyzes the use of five verbs, in Brazilian newspapers: dizer, afirmar, informar, pedir e anunciar (say, affirm, inform, ask and announce, inform, ask and announce). Used in verbal clauses, especially in those with statements from external sources, these verbs have the role of introducing the discourse of another as a way to confer authority to the journalists' statements. The analysis focus on three aspects: the type of Sayer, the mood of the clauses and the organization of the message. By using the computer program WordSmith Tools (SCOTT, 2008), the data were quantified from a set of 656 news collected from Folha de São Paulo and London BBC in 2009. The results point to the existence of three main patterns used by journalists concerning the five verbs analyzed. Other particularities are: a) Sayers that usually represent official sources, what is done by nouns, pronouns or noun groups in which the modifier indicates the position held; b) predominance of the indicative mood and the simple past tense, especially in the third person singular; c) a balance between quoting and projection, that one generally before the verbal process.

Tomando por base estudos desenvolvidos na Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional (LSF), neste trabalho, investigamos a representação do ator social da então Ministra da Casa Civil, Dilma Rousseff, em revistas semanais brasileiras de informação geral (Veja, Época e Istoé), em sua versão on line, com o objetivo de discutir a forma como essas revistas representam a referida atora social, apoiando, principalmente, no inventário sócio-semântico proposto por Theo van Leeuwen (1996, 1997, 2008).

Based on research in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) this paper studies the representation of the social actor Dilma Rousseff, when she was Minister of "casa Civil" of the Brazilian Government and was a pre-candidate to the presidency of the country. The data are taken from the on line version of the weekly magazines of general information Veja, Época e IstoÉ. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the magazines' representation of that social actor, based on Theo van Leeuwen's (1996, 1997, 2008) socio-semantic inventory.

Neste trabalho, apresentamos uma investigação baseada em corpora acerca da extensão do uso de estrangeirismos de origem inglesa no português do Brasil. Para tanto, utilizamos o corpus Banco de Português, do projeto DIRECT (LAEL, PUCSP), com mais de 230 milhões de palavras, de fontes orais e escritas, e o British National Corpus, com cerca de 100 milhões de palavras, também provenientes da escrita e fala. A investigação motiva-se (1) pela necessidade do envolvimento dos lingüistas e lingüistas aplicados em debates acerca de políticas públicas, (2) por ser esse um tema caro ao prof. John Robert Schmitz, e (3) pela escassez de trabalhos sobre estrangeirismos que utilizem corpora eletrônicos. Os resultados indicam que (1) há muitos anglicismos em vigor no português brasileiro, (2) a freqüência deles é baixa e (3) eles parecem adquirir sentidos e usos diferentes da língua de origem.

In this paper, we report a corpus-based investigation on the spread of use of English words in Brazilian Portuguese. For this purpose, we employed the Bank of Portuguese, a corpus created by the DIRECT Project (LAEL, PUC/SP), with over 230 million words, from spoken and written sources, and the British National Corpus, with 100 million words, from writing and speech as well. Our research is motivated by the following points: (1) the need for the engagement of linguists and applied linguists in debates over public policies, (2) the fact that this is a theme pursued by John Robert Schmitz, and (3) the lack of studies on foreign word borrowings based on electronic corpora. Results suggest that (1) a large number of English words are in use in Brazilian Portuguese, (2) their frequency is low, and (3) these words take on new different meanings from English
